Magnesium bisglycinate: why the form matters

Magnesium is the most bought supplement in France, and one of the most often bought badly. Most conversations stop at the number on the front of the jar and ignore the question that matters just as much: the form. For Calm Core, we chose buffered magnesium bisglycinate. Here is what that means, why it matters, and how to make magnesium part of a routine you actually keep.

What is magnesium bisglycinate?

Magnesium never exists alone in a supplement. It is always bound to a partner molecule, and that partner decides almost everything about how the mineral behaves once you swallow it.

In bisglycinate, magnesium is chelated with two molecules of glycine, one of the simplest amino acids your body makes and uses. Chelation means the mineral is held inside an organic claw rather than sitting as a loose salt. The practical consequence is that it is absorbed through amino acid pathways rather than as a free mineral, which tends to leave the digestive system undisturbed.

Warm morning light on skin, the quiet of a daily ritual

The word buffered on our label means the bisglycinate is stabilised to protect that chelated structure. It costs more to produce than a simple oxide. It is also the reason the jar gets finished.

What magnesium is officially recognised to do

Magnesium carries an unusually broad set of authorised European health claims, which gives a fair picture of how widely the body uses it.

Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It contributes to normal psychological function. It contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system. It contributes to normal muscle function, to electrolyte balance, to normal energy yielding metabolism and to normal protein synthesis. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

Nervous system, muscles, energy, psychological function. That breadth is why magnesium sits naturally in a calm daily routine without any claim having to be stretched.

Elemental magnesium: the only number worth comparing

This is where most labels lose people. A jar can state four hundred milligrams and mean the weight of the compound rather than the mineral it delivers. The figure that matters is elemental magnesium, declared with its percentage of the NRV.

Calm Core provides 250 mg of elemental magnesium per daily dose of two capsules, which is 67% of the NRV. That is the number you can hold against any other brand. A label that does not give it is asking you not to look too closely.

Why tolerance decides everything

Tolerance is not a comfort detail. It is the difference between a supplement you still take in week six and one that sits unopened at the back of a drawer.

The most common reason people abandon magnesium is digestive discomfort, and the most common cause of that discomfort is the form. Oxide is cheap and poorly absorbed. Marine magnesium is largely oxide and hydroxide despite the natural framing. Citrate is well absorbed but has a documented laxative effect at higher doses.

Bisglycinate is generally the gentlest of the daily forms, which is precisely why we chose it. Delivery is where good formulas are won or lost, a principle we apply across the range and explain on The Science. For a full comparison of every form, see our complete guide to magnesium.

How to take magnesium bisglycinate

The routine is deliberately simple: 2 capsules per day with a large glass of water, at whichever moment anchors best in your day. One jar of 60 capsules covers exactly 30 days.

Unlike vitamin C, magnesium has no obvious best hour. Morning works, evening works, and splitting the dose across the day is reasonable too, since absorption is better with moderate amounts. The honest answer is that the best moment is the one you will actually keep, a point we make at length in our article on making a supplement routine stick.

If sleep is your objective specifically, Night Reset is the evening version: the same buffered bisglycinate, with melatonin, taken thirty minutes before bed. Melatonin is the ingredient that carries the authorised claim on reducing the time it takes to fall asleep.

Frequently asked questions

Is bisglycinate better than other forms of magnesium?

The mineral itself is identical. What changes is the partner molecule and therefore the absorption pathway and the tolerance. We chose bisglycinate because form matters as much as formula.

Can I take magnesium every day, long term?

Yes, within the recommended daily dose. Magnesium is a nutrient the body uses continuously rather than a course to be interrupted.

Morning or evening?

Both work. Calm Core is designed as a daily base with no imposed hour. Choose the moment that anchors best and keep it.

Can I take Calm Core and Night Reset together?

They both contain magnesium, so combining them would stack the dose. Choose the one that fits your objective, or ask your doctor or pharmacist for personal advice.

Does magnesium interact with medication?

Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of certain medicines, including some antibiotics. If you are under treatment, ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Is Calm Core vegan?

The capsule is vegetal and the formula is gluten-free. Check the full ingredient list on the product page.
